The Indonesian government, through the Financial Services Authority
(OJK), has announced the launch date of the Indonesian Carbon Exchange. This
carbon trading platform is scheduled to be officially launched on September 26,
2023, marking a significant milestone in the countrys efforts to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.
This important announcement was made by Mahendra Siregar, Chairman of
the OJK Board of Commissioners, during a National Seminar with the theme
"Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction and Carbon Trading Opportunities in
Indonesia." The event took place in Jambi on Monday, September 18, 2023.
"It is planned that the inaugural launch of the Carbon Exchange
will take place on September 26, which is just one week away," Mahendra
Siregar said in a live broadcast on OJKs official YouTube channel.
With the launch of the Carbon Exchange, all stages of carbon trading
will begin, including upstream processes, carbon unit preparation,
registration, verification, certification, and ongoing trading. OJK is also
committed to continuously improving understanding of the carbon exchange among
all stakeholders with the aim of creating an efficient and transparent carbon
trading ecosystem.
OJK has organized a series of seminars in various cities across
Indonesia as part of efforts to increase carbon trading literacy. These
seminars have already been successfully held in Surabaya, Balikpapan, Makassar,
and Medan, featuring various speakers and stimulating valuable discussions.
Previously, OJK issued technical regulations related to the operation of
the carbon exchange, including the Financial Services Authority Regulation No.
14 of 2023 on Carbon Trading through the Carbon Exchange (POJK 14/2023) and
Circular Letter of the Financial Services Authority No. 12/SEOJK.04/2023 on the
Procedures for Carbon Trading through the Carbon Exchange (SEOJK 12/2023).
These regulations govern various aspects of carbon trading, including
the types of carbon units that can be traded on the Indonesian Carbon Exchange.
With these regulations in place, a clear and supportive framework is expected
to be established for businesses and stakeholders engaging in carbon trading
activities.
Communities, businesses, and the government throughout
Indonesia are eagerly anticipating the upcoming launch of the Indonesian Carbon
Exchange. With this concrete step, Indonesia is further committing to actively
participate in climate change mitigation and safeguarding environmental
sustainability for future generations. The launch of the Indonesian Carbon
Exchange is expected to open doors for sustainable investments and innovations
in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
