Climate change is now recognized as one of the significant risks facing the business world. With increasing awareness of the impacts of climate change, investors and other stakeholders are increasingly considering climate-related risks and opportunities in their investment decisions and risk management.

In the context of assessing climate-related financial impacts, guidance provided by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) offers deep insights into how companies can understand and integrate climate-related risks and opportunities into their financial frameworks and business strategies. The WBCSD guidance emphasizes the importance of companies not only identifying and managing climate-related risks but also proactively exploring opportunities arising from energy transition and adaptation to climate change. This includes increasing revenue and investment returns from climate solutions, as well as addressing the rising costs, reduced production, and depreciation of assets that may occur as a result of climate risks.

Through a systematic process, companies can develop a better understanding of how climate change can affect the premises of financial reporting and how this should be reflected in the assumptions and estimates used in accounting and financial reporting.

Strategic Steps in Climate-Related Financial Impact Assessment:

1.     Identification of Risks and Opportunities: The first step involves a comprehensive understanding of how climate change can specifically affect the company. This includes identifying transition risks, such as policy and norm changes, as well as direct physical risks from climate change itself. Equally important is identifying potential opportunities arising from increased demand for environmentally friendly technology, changing consumer preferences, and other sustainability initiatives.

2.     Development of Impact Pathways and Calculations: After identifying risks and opportunities, the next step is to assess how these can affect financial reporting. This process requires the development of models to estimate the potential financial impacts of each risk and opportunity.

3.     Collection of Relevant Data: To accurately estimate financial impacts, companies must gather relevant data, including climate-related scenario data and value chain information. Selecting the appropriate climate scenarios and collecting accurate data are key to effective assessment.

4.     Calculation of Financial Impacts: With appropriate models and data, companies can then calculate the financial impacts of climate-related risks and opportunities. This process can help determine any mitigation measures that may be necessary and plan adaptation strategies.

5.     Assessment of Assumptions and Accounting Standards: Finally, companies must assess how climate-related financial impacts affect the assumptions used in financial reporting and ensure that their disclosures comply with applicable accounting standards and regulations.

This process demonstrates the importance of integrating climate-related risks and opportunities into corporate financial management. By adopting a structured and proactive approach, companies can not only manage risks more effectively but also position themselves to capitalize on opportunities arising from the global transition to a low-carbon economy. This not only supports global efforts to combat climate change but also paves the way for sustainable growth and innovation in the business world.
