Indonesia has once again
received a grant of £27.2 million or equivalent to Rp 512 billion from the
British Government for Low Carbon Development in Indonesia.
This grant is official with
the signing of an agreement in the Low Carbon Development Initiative (LCDI)
Programme Grant Technical Agreement between the Government of Indonesia &
the UK Government, on Monday (2/10/2023).
This is the UK Governments
official support for the Low Carbon Development Initiative (LCDI) Phase 2, held
at the Office of the Ministry of National Development Planning/National
Development Planning Agency.
During the event, the UK
Minister for Indo-Pacific, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, stated that the second phase
of the LCDI grant is a form of support for Indonesias Low Carbon Development
and strengthening UK-Indonesia collaboration in the sectors of green
transition, low carbon growth, green economy, and the UKs commitment to ASEAN
centrality (Bappenas).
"We support the Low
Carbon Development Initiative to add our support to Indonesias green
transition and other sectors," said Trevelyan as quoted on Tuesday
(03/10/2023).
According to him,
Indonesias rapidly growing economy and innovation provide greater
opportunities for the two countries to work together, from trade and investment
to science and technology cooperation.
"The Low Carbon
Development Initiative will ensure that Indonesias economic growth continues
to be sustainable and resilient to the impacts of climate change and benefits
people in the UK, Indonesia and the rest of the Indo-Pacific," Mr
Trevelyan continued.
The first tranche of UK
support for Indonesias LCDI was launched in 2017. Since then, climate targets
have been taken more seriously in Indonesias development planning.
The UKs new £27.2 LCDI
Phase 2 funding for Indonesia will be allocated to support sustainable economic
development and growth through training, capability building, science-based
policy development, and piloting innovative low-carbon technologies.
Minister of National
Development Planning/Head of Bapennas, Suharso Monoarfa, explained that the Low
Carbon Development Initiative (LCDI) is the Indonesian governments main policy
to reduce emissions, boost growth, and promote sustainable development.
"This is the
governments work plan, one of the targets is to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions. Its achievement is one of the best during the 2019-2024 period. We
also appreciate the UK Government for placing the target of achieving Net-Zero Emissions
2050," said Suharso.
