According to the latest
survey conducted by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
and the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), economic confidence has been
declining for the second consecutive quarter. This is news that financial and
business professionals worldwide need to take note of.
The survey was conducted
before the conflict in Israel and Gaza in October, and although there has been
a slight dip, economic confidence is still better than the previous year.
However, indicators such as New Orders, Employment, and Capital Expenditure
have experienced declines, with only Capital Expenditure falling below
long-term averages.
Whats interesting is that
the decline in economic confidence is not uniform across the globe. In North
America, there has been a noticeable drop, while in Africa, economic confidence
has seen a significant increase. In the Asia-Pacific region, there are signs of
improvement, possibly due to economic policy efforts in China. In Western
Europe, economic sentiment continues to plummet, likely reflecting economic
issues in the eurozone and the UK.
Surprisingly, economic
confidence has decreased in the Middle East, even though global oil prices have
surged in recent months. Additionally, South Asia has seen a slight improvement
in confidence, despite a significant decline over the past year, possibly due
to economic challenges in Pakistan.
The Global Economic
Conditions Survey (GECS) also examines fear indicators related to economic
prospects. Concerns that customers or suppliers may go bankrupt have increased
slightly, although they have not reached historically alarming levels.
Economists from ACCA and
IMA caution that there are risks to global economic growth that should be
closely monitored. These risks include the impact of previously implemented
monetary policies, sharp increases in government bond yields, surging oil prices,
the economic situation in China, and geopolitical issues. Therefore, financial
and business professionals are expected to plan carefully in the face of this
economic uncertainty.
Furthermore, experts note
that inflation is a concern. Although cost pressures seem to have peaked, they
remain above historical averages. This suggests that central banks may need to
take more actions than what the market expects.
As we observe global
economic developments, it is essential for companies and individuals to plan
carefully and be mindful of the existing risks. Hopefully, the global economy
can recover and become more stable in the near future.
